1972 El Camino Fisher Body Number Plate General Information

  • Baltimore showed the distinctive style number on their trim tag and differentiated between L6 and V8 VIN series. It's not known if Kansas City and Van Nuys did in 1972 as none of the 1,058 13380 trim tags have surfaced yet. It is known than Kansas City and Van Nuys did code 13380 trim tags in 1971.

  • The SS option package (RPO Z25) continued with any optional V8 on a Chevelle sport coupe, convertible, or pickup.

  • While the Vehicle Identification Number format changed for 1972, the Fisher Body Style designation remained essentially the same with only typical variations between the assembly plants.

  • Trim code numbers were the same for bench or bucket seat style unlike previous years where bench and bucket seat trim codes were different for the same material. Bench seat styles will have the code A52 following the trim number and bucket seat styles will have the code A51.

  • Numbers in parentheses after the STYLE are number of units produced and are for total production of the series/model depicted on the body plate except where noted. Unless otherwise noted, this production number assumes the trim tag STYLE to match the same series/model number. This is not always the case as noted in the first bulleted item. It should also be noted that the VIN series/model format changed beginning in 1972 from a "13637" format to "1D37" format so the STYLE number listed on the trim tag will not match the Chevelle's corresponding VIN in any case.

    • All examples of 2-door sport coupes (37) and 2-door convertibles (67) have either the letter "B" or the letters "B" and "D" following the assembly date. The meaning of these letters is not known. It is suspected the "D" is for SS cars but not confirmed.
    • The 4-digit number at the bottom right is a data processing tracking number and has no significance today. This number is found in block 24 of the build sheet.

    • A 5-digit number follows the assembly date. This is a data processing tracking number and has no significance today. The first 4 digits are found in block 24 on build sheet but the 5th digit is unknown.
    • Some tags have a letter or letters following the date such as "L", "B", etc. The meaning of these letters is unknown. Many suspect the "L" indicates an SS-optioned El Camino but to date there is no real proof.
